The Providence is a Friendship sloop. Though sailors are indeed generally amicable, this classification of sailing vessel actually took its name from Friendship, Maine, where fishermen collectively originated the boat's design in the 1880s. The boat was used primarily for lobstering and local commerce. The spacious cockpit allowed the vessel to carry sizable loads, while the sail plan made it easy for one person to manage the single-masted rig. In the 1900s, the boats received auxiliary motors until 1920, when power boats supplanted them for commercial use.
